ABOUT THE STUDIO

"I was a young Shakespearean artist, self-learning some Bach pieces when a chance encounter with Prof. Sutherland led to an invitation for a performance of Rachmaninoff's second concerto by Anders Martinson. I have never recovered to this day."

-- Ricardo Barretto

Brazilian-born Artist, actor, Science Fiction writer/researcher.

Bruce Sutherland (in memoriam)

Professor Bruce Sutherland was a noted American musician, who gained world recognition as a composer in the international Gottschalk Competition. Twentieth-century composers, including Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Malipiero, Petrassi, and Dallapiccola, contributed words of praise for Sutherland's music. Jose Iturbi (photo) conducting the Bridgeport Symphony in a 25th Anniversary Concert with David Bar-Illan as piano soloist, presented the world premiere of Sutherland's prizewinning score: Allegro Fanfara for Orchestra.

He gained particular recognition as the teacher and mentor of numerous pianists and musicians, among these are Rufus Choi, Hyongsoon Kim, Max Levinson, Anders Martinson, John Novacek (all winners of international piano competitions), and Daniel Varsano, whose RCA recordings received two Grand Prix du Disque awards; Diane Baker, who in addition to doing international concert tours as the keyboard half of the Drinkall-Baker duo, achieved a distinguished discography of cello and piano repertoire with Roger Drinkall; Betsy and Jon Sutherland, who toured the United States as piano soloists under Columbia Artists Management.

Sutherland also received recognition four times from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and was honored in the nation's capital by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars as a "Distinguished Teacher". Many of his students have been heard as soloists in major concert venues around the world, including Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Kennedy Center, Los Angeles Music Center, Ambassador Auditorium, UCLA's Royce Hall and at music festivals such as Marlboro, Ravinia, Aspen, La Jolla, Santa Fe, and Tanglewood. They have performed concertos with such major orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Salonen, the Boston Pops with John WIlliams, and appeared on television, including the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, the "Steve Allen Show", "Good Morning America", "Today in L.A.", and on stage with Dudley Moore and others.
